‘Mood Test’ May Help Pick Paint Colors

Clients overwhelmed by paint color choices may find peace and focus in a new online “mood test” developed by CIL Paints.

Choosing a mood for a room is the easiest way to start the color selection process, says the Canadian paint brand.

“Studies show that even once in the store, many consumers still don’t know what paint color to buy, yet almost everyone can describe what kind of feeling they would like to create in their room,” says Jennifer Jones, marketing communications manager of CIL Paints.

Thus was born CIL’s new website (www.cil.ca), featuring a “mood test” tool to help consumers choose colors.

The test walks visitors through a series of images and asks them to click on their favorite ones. The results “reveal a person’s décor taste,” and users are directed to a color palette “to help them create their desired ambience,” CIL says.

Users may put together their own color swatches or seek real-time recommendations from the site’s Colour Coordinator.

Most paint customers cite choosing a wall color as the hardest part of a paint project, Jones said. Starting with a mood, rather than a display of thousands of colors, may simplify the process.

The company offers these moods and color combinations as examples:

• Clean and playful: Mix sunny yellows with warm grays or light corals with neutrals.

• Soft and elegant: Combine muted colors such as aqua green with mocha or dusty rose and light gray.

• Mellow and comforting: Combine warm shades such as gold, wine, slate brown and teal.

• Deep and luxurious: Mix jewel-like colors—jade green, ruby red, deep purple, chocolate brown—on one or all four walls.

“No matter what mood you choose for your rooms, CIL wants to ensure that consumers are in a good mood when undertaking a paint project,”
